About the Mazie Project
The YPA Maize Project operates on a two- year contract basis, encompassing four distinct planting seasons. Here’s a breakdown of the key points:
- Land and Investment: Farmers can secure a one-acre maize plot for a one-time fee of 2.5 million Ugandan shillings (UGX). This is returned to the farmer at the end of the contract if the farmer does not wish to continue with their project.
- Harvest and Earnings: Following each successful harvest season (approximately every six months), farmers receive a payout of 1.2 million UGX. However, it’s important to note that farmers will only receive payouts for three seasons: the first, third, and fourth.
Season Sharing:
- YPA takes responsibility for managing all aspects of planting across all four seasons, ensuring best practices and maximizing yields.
- YPA retains the harvest profits from the second season only. This profit covers operational costs associated with managing the entire project, including planting for all seasons, and serves as a service fee for YPA’s expertise.
- Farmers retain control and harvest profits during the first, third, and fourth seasons.
Contract Completion and Reinvestment:
- After the two-year contract concludes, farmers receive their initial investment of 2.5 million UGX back in addition to the earnings from their three harvests (totaling 3.6 million UGX).
- If farmers wish to continue participating in the project beyond the initial contract, they can choose to reinvest their earnings and principal amount into a new two-year contract.
